Welcome to Year 2!
We are your teachers this year. Mrs Chow will be teaching on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Miss Postill will be teaching on a Thursday and Friday, although you will still see her around school on Tuesday and Wednesday in her role as SENCO. Miss Lawler is usually in our class all week but unfortunately is poorly at the moment. We wish her a speedy recovery and welcome Miss Evans in the meantime.
We encourage all children in Year 2 to develop their independence throughout the year. We therefore ask that you do not come into the cloakroom / classroom with your child. Our cloakroom is very small and we share it with Year 3. If you wish to speak to a class teacher, there will always be an adult at the bottom of the stairs in the morning – they will be more than happy to pass the message on to us. Otherwise, we will make ourselves available for quick chats at the end of the school day.
To support your child in becoming more independent, please make sure all of their belongings are clearly labelled with their names.
- Spelling and times tables are sent home on Mondays
- Reading books changed Mondays and Thursdays
- Homework is due in Wednesday
- Outdoor PE kit is needed on Wednesdays and Thursdays
- Spelling test and tables test Friday
- Library visit – Friday
- Homework is sent home on Fridays
In Year 2, homework is sent home each Friday and children have until Wednesday to return it.
Two pieces of homework will be sent. Majority of the time, one of these pieces will be English or Maths based. This will allow children to practise and consolidate skills which have been taught that week. The second piece will always be handwriting. For children to achieve the expected standard at the end of Key Stage 1, they must be able to show the correct joins, tall letters (ascenders) and tail letters (descenders). Handwriting homework allows children the additional practise at this.
We ask that all homework is done in pencil please.
In Year 2, children will have the opportunity to read to an adult up to three times a week. Your child will read once with the class teacher during Guided Reading and then during two other opportunities throughout the week with Mrs Chow, Miss Postill, Miss Lawler or Miss Evans. We therefore ask that their reading book is in school every day.
To help your child progress with reading, we ask that you read at home at least three times a week. If you do read with your child, please write in their reading record so we know which page they are up to. Please also comment if they finish the book and we will do our best to change it for you.
This half term, our topic is Go Wild!
Take a look at our Autumn 2 topic web to see what we will be learning about!!!
We have a very busy year ahead of us and look forward to working alongside you and your child.
Thank you for your support,
Miss Postill Mrs Chow Miss Evans Miss Lawler
