Reception Summer 1 Topic Page

Our topic in Summer 1 is Growth and Change

In Reception there are seven areas of learning from which the children’s learning opportunities will be planned. The areas of learning are as follows:

Expressive Arts and Design (EAD)

I will be learning to…

  • Use and explore different materials for pattern making
  • Make printed butterflies
  • Make observational drawings of signs of spring
  • Explore music and singing linked to mini beasts
  • Use a variety of materials to create minibeast homes

Understanding the World (UW)

I will be learning to…

  • Find out about signs of spring
  • Observe caterpillars and find out about the butterfly lifecycle
  • Take care of creatures and their environments
  • Grow plants and observe their changes.
  • Talk about events from my home school book
  • Understand the Christian Values and learning about how we are all special and unique.

Physical Development (PD)

I will continue learning to…

  • Travel in a variety of ways
  • Explore movements with my body
  • Move with confidence, control and safety
  • Develop my hand control
  • Learn about a healthy lifestyle
  • Learn to balance on different parts of my body
  • Use a range of tools safely
  • Play group games
  • Move safely in the space
  • Use small and large equipment
  • Dance to music



Mathematics (M)

I will be continuing to learn to….

  • count, recognise and order numbers to 20 and beyond
  • add and takeaway by counting on and back
  • say the number one more/less than a given number up to 10.
  • complete repeating patterns
  • use developing mathematical ideas to solve practical problems
  • compare and talk about different lengths
  • use everyday words to describe position
  • order days of the week
  • begin to double and half numbers

Literacy (L)

I will continue to learn to…

  • recognise and write my name independently.
  • read a range of fiction and non-fiction books
  • know the different sounds that letters make (phonics)
  • blend and segment sounds for reading and writing
  • learn the tricky words
  • write for a purpose e.g. making lists, labelling pictures.
  • re-tell stories, writing about lifecycles.

Personal Social Emotional Development (PSED)

I will be continuing to learn to….

  • participate in turn taking games
  • try new activities independently and select resources independently.
  • get dressed independently for P.E
  • know routines of the school day
  • think about the feelings of others
  • talk about my family and other people who are important to me
  • think about occasions/events special to themselves and others

Communication and Language (CL)

I will be continuing to learn to…

  • take part in circle time
  • imagine and recreate roles in real life family situations and fictional stories.
  • asking questions
  • talking about my family
  • listen to stories and rhymes

Our PE days are Tuesdays and Fridays each week.

We keep PE kits in school each week and send them home for washing at the end of each half term.

Home school books are sent home every Friday with details of what we have been doing in school. Each child must complete a sentence and a picture about what they have been doing at home and bring it in to school on Monday to share with the class.

Reading books are sent home in your child’s reading folder, please hear them read as often as possible and ensure your child’s reading folder is in school at all times.
